Tehilim for Refuah (Healing)
The traditional list for healing of body and soul. Seven core chapters with full text on this page, the 36-chapter list, and Rabbi Nachman's Tikkun HaKlali.
Seven core chapters
If short on time, these are the chapters nearly all sources agree on. Full text below.
Tikkun HaKlali (Rebbe Nachman)
Rabbi Nachman of Breslov taught that these ten chapters, said as one continuous reading, constitute a "general rectification" for the soul. Traditional in Breslov, also said by many others. About 15 minutes.

English translation
- 1 For the Leader; with string-music; on the Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
- 2 O LORD, rebuke me not in Thine anger, Neither chasten me in Thy wrath.
- 3 Be gracious unto me, O LORD, for I languish away; Heal me, O LORD, for my bones are affrighted.
- 4 My soul also is sore affrighted; And Thou, O LORD, how long?
- 5 Return, O LORD, deliver my soul; Save me for Thy mercy's sake.
- 6 For in death there is no remembrance of Thee; In the nether-world who will give Thee thanks?
- 7 I am weary with my groaning; Every night make I my bed to swim; I melt away my couch with my tears.
- 8 Mine eye is dimmed because of vexation; It waxeth old because of all mine adversaries.
- 9 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; For the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.
- 10 The LORD hath heard my supplication; The LORD receiveth my prayer.
- 11 All mine enemies shall be ashamed and sore affrighted; They shall turn back, they shall be ashamed suddenly.

English translation
- 1 A Psalm; a Song at the Dedication of the House; of David.
- 2 I will extol thee, O LORD, for Thou hast raised me up, And hast not suffered mine enemies to rejoice over me.
- 3 O LORD my God, I cried unto Thee, and Thou didst heal me;
- 4 O LORD, Thou broughtest up my soul from the nether-world; Thou didst kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
- 5 Sing praise unto the LORD, O ye His godly ones, And give thanks to His holy name.
- 6 For His anger is but for a moment, His favour is for a life-time; Weeping may tarry for the night, But joy cometh in the morning.
- 7 Now I had said in my security: ' I shall never be moved.'
- 8 Thou hadst established, O LORD, in Thy favour my mountain as a stronghold— Thou didst hide Thy face; I was affrighted.
- 9 Unto Thee, O LORD, did I call, And unto the LORD I made supplication:
- 10 'What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise Thee? shall it declare Thy truth?
- 11 Hear, O LORD, and be gracious unto me; LORD, be Thou my helper.'
- 12 Thou didst turn for me my mourning into dancing; Thou didst loose my sackcloth, and gird me with gladness;
- 13 So that my glory may sing praise to Thee, and not be silent; O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto Thee for ever.

English translation
- 1 For the Leader. A Psalm of David. .
- 2 Happy is he that considereth the poor; The LORD will deliver him in the day of evil.
- 3 The LORD preserve him, and keep him alive, let him be called happy in the land; And deliver not Thou him unto the greed of his enemies.
- 4 The LORD support him upon the bed of illness; Mayest Thou turn all his lying down in his sickness.
- 5 As for me, I said: 'O LORD, be gracious unto me; Heal my soul; for I have sinned against Thee.'
- 6 Mine enemies speak evil of me: 'When shall he die, and his name perish?'
- 7 And if one come to see me, he speaketh falsehood; His heart gathereth iniquity to itself; When he goeth abroad, he speaketh of it.
- 8 All that hate me whisper together against me, Against me do they devise my hurt:
- 9 'An evil thing cleaveth fast unto him; And now that he lieth, he shall rise up no more.'
- 10 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who did eat of my bread, Hath lifted up his heel against me.
- 11 But Thou, O LORD, be gracious unto me, and raise me up, That I may requite them.
- 12 By this I know that Thou delightest in me, That mine enemy doth not triumph over me.
- 13 And as for me, Thou upholdest me because of mine integrity, And settest me before Thy face for ever.
- 14 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, From everlasting and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.

English translation
- 1 A Song, a Psalm of the sons of Korah; for the Leader; upon Mahalath Leannoth. Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite.
- 2 O LORD, God of my salvation, What time I cry in the night before Thee,
- 3 Let my prayer come before Thee, Incline Thine ear unto my cry.
- 4 For my soul is sated with troubles, And my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
- 5 I am counted with them that go down into the pit; I am become as a man that hath no help;
- 6 Set apart among the dead, Like the slain that lie in the grave, Whom Thou rememberest no more; And they are cut off from Thy hand. .
- 7 Thou hast laid me in the nether-most pit, In dark places, in the deeps.
- 8 Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, And all Thy waves Thou pressest down. Selah
- 9 Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me; Thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
- 10 Mine eye languisheth by reason of affliction; I have called upon Thee, O LORD, every day, I have spread forth my hands unto Thee.
- 11 Wilt Thou work wonders for the dead? Or shall the shades arise and give Thee thanks? Selah
- 12 Shall Thy mercy be declared in the grave? Or Thy faithfulness in destruction?
- 13 Shall Thy wonders be known in the dark? And Thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
- 14 But as for me, unto Thee, O LORD, do I cry, And in the morning doth my prayer come to meet Thee.
- 15 LORD, why castest Thou off my soul? Why hidest Thou Thy face from me?
- 16 I am afflicted and at the point of death from my youth up; I have borne Thy terrors, I am distracted.
- 17 Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; Thy terrors have cut me off.
- 18 They came round about me like water all the day; They compassed me about together.
- 19 Friend and companion hast Thou put far from me, And mine acquaintance into darkness.

English translation
- 1 A Prayer of the afflicted, when he fainteth, and poureth out his complaint before the LORD. .
- 2 O LORD, hear my prayer, And let my cry come unto Thee.
- 3 Hide not Thy face from me in the day of my distress; Incline Thine ear unto me; In the day when I call answer me speedily.
- 4 For my days are consumed like smoke, And my bones are burned as a hearth.
- 5 My heart is smitten like grass, and withered; For I forget to eat my bread.
- 6 By reason of the voice of my sighing My bones cleave to my flesh.
- 7 I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am become as an owl of the waste places.
- 8 I watch, and am become Like a sparrow that is alone upon the housetop.
- 9 Mine enemies taunt me all the day; They that are mad against me do curse by me.
- 10 For I have eaten ashes like bread, And mingled my drink with weeping,
- 11 Because of Thine indignation and Thy wrath; For Thou hast taken me up, and cast me away.
- 12 My days are like a lengthening shadow; And I am withered like grass.
- 13 But Thou, O LORD, sittest enthroned for ever; And Thy name is unto all generations.
- 14 Thou wilt arise, and have compassion upon Zion; For it is time to be gracious unto her, for the appointed time is come.
- 15 For Thy servants take pleasure in her stones, And love her dust.
- 16 So the nations will fear the name of the LORD, And all the kings of the earth Thy glory;
- 17 When the LORD hath built up Zion, When He hath appeared in His glory;
- 18 When He hath regarded the prayer of the destitute, And hath not despised their prayer.
- 19 This shall be written for the generation to come; And a people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.
- 20 For He hath looked down from the height of His sanctuary; From heaven did the LORD behold the earth;
- 21 To hear the groaning of the prisoner; To loose those that are appointed to death;
- 22 That men may tell of the name of the LORD in Zion, And His praise in Jerusalem; .
- 23 When the peoples are gathered together, And the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.
- 24 He weakened my strength in the way; He shortened my days.
- 25 I say: 'O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days, Thou whose years endure throughout all generations.
- 26 Of old Thou didst lay the foundation of the earth; And the heavens are the work of Thy hands.
- 27 They shall perish, but Thou shalt endure; Yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; As a vesture shalt Thou change them, and they shall pass away;
- 28 But Thou art the selfsame, And Thy years shall have no end.
- 29 The children of Thy servants shall dwell securely, And their seed shall be established before Thee.'

Frequently asked questions
How were these chapters chosen?
The list rests on traditional sources: Likutei MaHaRiCH (OC §8), classic Sephardic siddur appendices, and the various commentaries on Tehilim known as "Sefer Segulot Tehilim". Most are personal psalms of King David in distress (chapter 6: "Al beapcha"), psalms of hope (chapter 23: "Hashem Ro'i"), and psalms of thanksgiving after rescue.
Do I have to say all of them, or just some?
Not required. Many say the entire list (a full circuit ~ 1 hour). Others choose the seven highlighted (6, 30, 41, 88, 102, 121, 130). Some say only Rabbi Nachman's Tikkun HaKlali (10 chapters, ~15 minutes).
In what order?
The classic order is by chapter number ascending. But the principal thing is intent ("a heart drawn close to its Creator"), not strict order. You can start with whichever chapter speaks to you and continue from there.
Can I say them for someone else?
Yes, very common practice. Family members, friends, and community members say Tehilim for the choleh. The custom is to mention the choleh's first name + mother's name: "L'refuat [Name] ben/bat [Mother's name]".
What if I don't read Hebrew well?
Bedi'eved you can say them in English or any language you understand, and Otot includes an English translation for every chapter. Intent and prayer are the principal thing. But Hebrew is preferred where possible, even without word-by-word comprehension.
